I am not much of a storyteller, but I do remember having many a sleepover at grandma's house. My sister and I would help her pull out the hide-a-bed and make it up. Just before tucking us in, grandma would always give us each a Tums. She was sure that the key to a good night's sleep was to have a Tums just before bed. And you know, sometimes when I can't get to sleep, I go take one and it seems to help. Thanks for the trick grandma!

The Christmas of grade 2 I received my first brand new doll. I was overjoyed with the soft-bodied, blonde-haired beauty and she went everywhere with me. Needless to say, by Autumn she was looking a little worse for wear. One night after I fell asleep, Mom snuck her out of my arms to do some damage control. After her very long day of work, by kerosene lamp, she took needle and thread and scissors and prettied up my baby. I woke the next morning to find her tucked back into my arms. As a child, I never fully appreciated that effort; as an adult I can only stand in admiration.

The most frequent alarm heard on the second floor at the house in Venn: Mom singing "It's time to get up, it's time to get up, it's morning, it's morning!" which, if no response was forthcoming after a few rounds, became "Girls, get a move on, you're going to be late". It generally never degenerated to her having to climb the stairs and shake us awake, but it did occasionally happen. We found it more beneficial for all concerned to just respond to the first call.
